Dust-mites and Allergens

There is a lot of ‘hype’ regarding this subject and hopefully this information will allow you to sort out fact from fiction.

• Dust mites are not insects but arachnids. (the same family as ticks and spiders)
  
• While Dust mites do no harm themselves it is their excretion (allergen) which causes adverse reaction
  
• The life expectancy of a dust mite is between 2-3 months
  
• The average 12 month old mattress contains in excess of 2 million live dust mites
  
• Dust mites excrete 40 pods per day on average (at least 80 million excretement pods per day in a 12 month old mattress)
  
• Mite proof pillow covers and mattresses protectors trap the dust mite in the pillow or mattress (which allows for increased bleeding) but does not protect against the allergens, which is what causes the allergic reaction
  
• Every time someone sits on a mattress, or applies pressure on a pillow, clouds of the harmful allergens are released onto the suspecting bed occupant.
